The course was in excellent condition and the prospect of a high winning score was a distinct possibility. The first award on offer was at the long Par Four ninth hole where the big hitters got a chance to open their shoulders and let it rip. This provided a new name on the awards list as sponsors guest Tony Osbourne duly came out on top.The front nine was proving to be a tough challenge for our players as scoring was lower than expected and the main bulk of the scoring would need to be done on the last half of the course to take the main competition. The 122 yard Par 3 12th hole was the scene for the 'Nearest the Pin' prize and this was duly scooped by Bob Lee with an excellent tee shot to within three feet. The final spot prize of the day was held at the short Par 4 17th hole where Steve Emery prevailed. The Main competition was always going to be a close ru affair and this proved to be correct where the count back rule was used on quite a few occasions to decide finishing positions. The third place originally went the way of Bob Lee but a clerical error was discovered after the cards were input onto the main computer and this has now been awarded to Rob Scarrott. The Runners up spot was claimed by Dale Church with a superb 37 points. As previously thought the back nine was going to be vital in this competition and this proved correct as an excellent inward 22 points was enough to give Dorian Sanchez a total of 38 points and thus take the NME Services sponsored trophy.

brampton-heath-golf-day-report-and-results 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Brampton Heath Golf Club provided the venue for round Five of the Crown and Anchor season and a before we start on the action a big thanks must go out to John Behan for collecting all the monies prior to the first shot being struck in order to accommodate our overly fussy hosts. Parched fairways and decent greens meant that scoring would be good for all our participants. The two call down Par 3 holes were proving to be a little troublesome for the players in one case a bag was left in front of the green thus providing an extra obstacle for the those teeing off and in another incident a group were waiting patiently by the green awaiting the tee shots not realising that one of them was still holding the flag!!! Tom Gwilliam's heart must have been in his mouth with the prospect of a hefty bar bill as his tee shot finished to within inches of an ace at the Par three 7th hole as he scooped the 'nearest the pin' award. The 'Longest Drive' award on the Par 5 tenth hole went again to the big hitting Martin Behan and the 'Nearest the Pin in Two' award on the 18th hole was cruelly snatched from Paddy Behan's grasp with the final approach shot of the competition from Neil Auburn which owed to a huge amount of luck and good fortune. The main competition was always going fiercely contested and the third place slot went to Martin Behan with an impressive 40 points and a further cash prize to add to his previous award. A storming back nine of 22 points saw Steve Mckenna roar through the field and claim the Runners Up spot with 40 points but this was not quite enough as the ever popular John Behan claimed the title and recipient of the Crown and Anchor Public House sponsored trophy with a superb 42 points. The final award of the day in the 'Must do better' category had a new member as Brad Witt scooped the now infamous 'Pink Hat' with 23 points. Details of John Behan's winning round below

millbrook-golf-day-report-and-results-2 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Dark skies and torrential rain greeted our travelers fo Round Five of the season hosted by the Millbrook Golf Club. With the rain coming down by the bucket load and the course starting to flood, he prospects of play were not looking to promising. The members had started to blame the Captain for the rain by reminding him of his last golf day's speech in which he referred on how lucky we had been with the weather. A decision was taken to delay the start time by half an hour in the faint hope that the deluge would ease. With all the wet weather gear donned and the umbrellas in full use, the players descended to the first tee only to be greeted by a miracle of bright skies and the sun trying to shine through. The course had survived the severe rain fall and the conditions were perfect for good scoring. First prize on offer was at the short 4th hole where Dorian Sanchez scooped the "Nearest the Pin in Two" award. The Par 3 10th hole which two hours previously was flooded provided the venue for the "Nearest the Pin" challenge and this was duly claimed by Budge with a superb approach. The "Big Hitters" had to wait until the 384 yard Par 4 18th hole to flex their muscles and he bragging rights for the day went the way of Martin "Boom Boom" Behan. In the absence of the Captain, the award ceremony was conduced by Vice Captain Paul Mcallister in conjunction with our kind sponsor John Behan of BMH Scaffolding. The overall third place spot was claimed by the absent Captain Neil Auburn with 34 points - sincere apologies for the early departure. The Runners Up spot was claimed by another consistent performer in Dave Austin with an excellent 35 points. There was a new name on the Winner's podium where Mark Gee with a superb 36 points to claim the main competition's trophy. Details of Mark Gee's winning round below

the-bedford-golf-day-report-and-results-2 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 A bright and sunny day at The Bedford Golf Club greeted Round Four of the Crown and Anchor season kindly sponsored by Northampton Roofing. This often demanding course with the added difficulties of a stiff breeze and parched fairways meant this was going to be a true test of our intrepid golfers. All the talk before play started was on the initial rumours of one our member's exploits in a midweek medal competition at Overstone Park Golf Club. The evidence in the below picture was eventually proven to be totally unfounded and merely a missed time press of the 'ENTER' button. The true result of this effort should have read a very respectable 35 points, Sorry JB !!!! The first award on offer was the 'nearest the pin' at the Par 3 Ninth hole where a shot into 8 feet from the flag was enough to earn Neil Auburn the prize. The keenly contested and most prestigious 'Longest Drive' award on the Par 4 13th hole went the way of Dave Austin with an effort that nearly run out of fairway it was that long. The 'Nearest the Pin in Two' contest had been well placed at the demanding final hole and founder member and now honored guest Mick Gallagher took this award with an excellent approach shot into 6 feet. The scoring in the main contest was again fierce and competitive which again reflects on the overall improvement in standards from all of our members within the Society. The third place on the rostrum went the way of fast improving Dorian Sanchez with 41 points. The silver medal position with an excellent 42 points and a three shot reduction in his handicap to boot went to Steve Emery. However, the winner and recipient of the Northampton Roofing trophy kindly donated and presented by Phil Cassidy went the way of Bob Lee with a superb 43 points. The final award of the day and the most keenly anticipated was the "Pink Hat" and this is now in the possession of Danny Brown with 17 points. silverstone-golf-day-report-and-result-2 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Silverstone Golf Club with fine weather but blustery wind conditions staged the next round of the Crown and Anchor golf season. A field of 31 golfers had assembled in the hope of lifting the prestigious trophy kindly donated by Horts Estate Agents. If the previous golf day results were anything to go by then every accurate drive, wayward iron shot and putts holed were going to be vital in the quest for valuable for a decent finishing position and vital Order of Merit points. The first award of the day was the "Nearest the pin" prize on the Par 3 3rd hole where Dale Church's tee shot into six feet was enough to take the honors. The narrow fairway of the Par 5 12th provided the scene of the next award on offer for the Long Hitters whereby the awesome power of Eddie O'Grady prevailed. The final spot prize for "Nearest the pin in 2" on the demanding Par 4 17th went the way of Gary Loveland with a fine approach shot. The award ceremony took place in the clubhouse with our kind sponsors Dorian and Adam from Horts Estate Agents presenting the trophy and prizes. The third place on the rostrum went the way of local Silverstone member Steve Diggin with an excellent 36 points. The runner up spot and obviously benefiting from playing a midweek round at Overstone from the championship tees was Martin Behan with a superb 37 points. However the winner and recipient of the trophy was Richie Radcliffe with a superb 38 points and a few pints after wards to celebrate I would imagine. It appears that Paddy Behan is very reluctant to give the "Pink Hat" up without a fight as he promptly scooped the award for the second consecutive golf day with 21points See you all again at The Bedford for the next round!!!!

pavenham-park-golf-day-report-and-results 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Augusta style sloping greens and parched fairways of Pavenham Park provided the next challenge for the Crown and Anchor golfers. The severe sloping greens in particular were causing many a nightmare for all our players, a fine example of this was that one of our players had three eagle putts on Par 5 holes and did not record a single birdie. The dried up lake on the 18th also proved deceptive enough for one of our travellers who thought it was safe enough to retrive his ball only to find it was a little softer than its appearance and duly sunk up to his ankles. The first award of the day was the "Nearest the pin in two" prize on the Par 4 4th hole where John Cooper's approach shot was enough to take the spoils. The next award on offer was for the Long Hitters on the Par 4 10th hole and this was duly scooped up by Steve McKenna. The final spot prize for nearest the pin on the Par 3 16th went the way of the ever popular Phil Cassidy. The award ceremony took place in the clubhouse with our kind sponsor Keith Salmon presenting the trophy and prizes. Bob Lee, the defending Order of Merit champion kicked his season off with 35 points and a third place to boot. Budge continued his good early season form with an excellent 39 points and the Runners Up spot. However, the winner and recipient of the trophy was Rob Scarrott with superb 41 points and a severe reduction in his handicap. The most prestigious award of the day was the "Pink Visor" which has now been handed over to Paddy Behan. A bright start to the round with many players enjoying the warmer weather but by the end of the day varying items of clothing had been donned in order to shelter from the freezing winds. The first award of the day was the "Nearest the pin in two" prize on the Par 4 11th hole where a pitch shot into ten feet from Dave Austin was enough to take the spoils. The next award on offer was on offer at the Par 3 15th where the new Society Captain made his mark on his term in office with an unexpected hole in one to claim "Nearest the Pin" prize and a hefty bar bill to boot. The final spot prize went the way of new member Dan Turner when he claimed the "Longest Drive" award. The award ceremony took place in the clubhouse with our kind sponsor Steve Duncan of Charmac Ltd presenting the trophy and prizes. Neil Auburn claimed the third place with the 36 points and Martin Johnson then picked up the Runners Up spot with an excellent 38 points. silverstone-golf-day-report-and-result 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 The gods were again shining on our intrepid travellers as a bright and sunny morning at Silverstone Golf Club hosted the final event of the Golfing season. The draw had thrown together the top four in the race to the 'Order of Merit' title and the talk was to whether Bob Lee could hold onto his points lead or crumble under the pressure from the rest. There were plenty of additional awards up for grabs so all our golfers were in with a chance of picking up a prize. Danny Brown duly took the first award of the day for his tee shot into the 122 yard par 3 3rd. Paul Mcallister then duly followed suit with his effort into the 173 yard 6th. The third nearest the pin award on the front nine went the way of Martin Johnson for his effort on the 154 yard 8th hole. Bob Lee was holding his nerve in the race for the 'Order of Merit' brilliantly with a solid 20 points on the outward nine but Dorian Sanchez was keeping up the pressure on him with an excellent 21 points. It then became the Tom Gwillam show for the next two awards as he promptly put his second shot into the par 4 11th hole, to within 2 feet and then followed that up with the Longest Drive award on the next hole. Jez Diggin the claimed the next prize with a shot into the 141 yard par 3 16th hole. The penultimate prize went the way of our Secretary, Martin Behan with what he describes as the 'shot of the year' into the Par 4 17th hole. The last spot award of the day went to Dale Church for his excellent drive on the final hole. With no post round golf food to be had at the club all re-convened back at the Crown and Anchor for the presentation, buffet and refreshments. The third place on the podium for the day went the way of Bob Lee with another steady round of 37 points and then the Runners Up spot went to one of our newer members Martin Johnson with an excellent 38 points. Steve Diggin duly collected the main prize of the day with a superb 42 points. The final award of the evening and most prestigious went to the ever consistent Bob Lee who claimed the 'Order of Merit' title with 250 points

the-bedford-golf-day-report-and-results 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Sponsored by BMH Scaffolding The sun was baking and the heat was stifling, these were the conditions that faced our intrepid golf travellers for the trip to The Bedford Golf Club. The starter provided the first group off with the vital information that all the pins were in the centre of the greens due to it being Ladies Captain's Day at the club. Obviously he and the greenkeeper were not and talking terms as some of the pins were well tucked away! With plenty of run on the parched fairways and excellent greens this meant that scoring was going to be low and this proved correct as the defending champion John Cassidy was the early leader in the clubhouse with 40 points. As more and more groups returned to the hut and still no sign of that score being overtaken it looked like for all the world that the trophy was remaining with the defending champion. However, as is the case so often the last group provided the eventual winner when Eddie Mclinchie with the aid of a 'chip in' birdie 2 on the last hole claimed the title with an excellent 43 points. The trophy due to a mix up now disguised itself as a 'pint glass' was duly presented by our Sponsor John Behan to Eddie. Outgoing champion John Cassidy finished Runner Up and third place on the podium went the way of Eddie O'Grady with an excellent 38 points. Phil Cassidy claimed his second 'longest Drive' award of the season with an excellent effort on the par 4 13th hole. The 'nearest the pin' prize went the way of Dorian Sanchez for his effort on the Par 3 9th whilst the 'must do better category' was awarded to Mark Gee. Prize Winners Gallery       Final Standings

silverstone-golf-day-report-and-results 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Sponsored by Horts Estate Agents Silverstone Golf Club hosted the third golf day of the Crown and Anchor Society season. Those who had last played the course at Christmas encountered frozen greens and very cold weather but those were not to be repeated as the sun was burning brightly and the course in excellent shape. The first prize up for grabs was the nearest the pin on the 122 yard par 3 which was duly won by Andy Churchill. There is one thing for certain in the Golf Society calendar is that John Cooper will pick up a Longest Drive award somewhere along the line. This day he duly obliged with a monster drive on the Par 5 12th hole. The overall competition went the way of Rich Diggin with an excellent 41 points and the recipient of a trophy duly presented by Dorian and Adam our sponsors . Runners Up spot went the way of the ever consistent Chap with a score of 38 points. The remaining place on the rostrum went to another consistent golfer of this year's season Bob Lee with 38 points. The final award of the day the "must do better" competition went to the way of Dennis Leach with 14 points. pavenham-park-golf-day-report-and-result 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Sponsored by Keith Salmon Construction Another new course Pavenham Park hosted the second golf day for thirty five Society golfers. Those who had been on a scouting mission prior to the day had given it a glowing report and they were proved to be correct in their assessment as a warm day and a course in excellent condition awaited the gladiators for battle.A course consisting of five long par 3's and five par 5's accompanied with "Augusta" type sloping greens ensured that a solid round of golf would need to be played in order to take the title. Once again Gary Loveland provided a "champagne moment" as he holed his third shot from 80 yards on a par 5 for an unlikely net 1 and six ponts. An additional prize of "nearest the pin in two" was introduced on the par 4 4th hole. This went the way of Neil Auburn with a shot that finished up eight feet from the pin, however four putts were required to complete the hole for an ugly six.Phil Cassidy straightened up his driving (see Wavendon Golf Report) to take the "Longest Drive"  prize with a monster strike on the par 4 10th hole.Budge duly claimed the "Nearest the Pin" award for his effort on the long par 3 16th. The overall competition went the way of Dale Church with an excellent 39 points and recipient of a trophy that appeared to have shrunk in the wash.Runners Up spot went the way of Matt Care with 36 points who just pipped Chap on countback. The final award of the day the "must do better" competition went to guest player Jes Diggin. wavendon-golf-day-report-and-result 2012-02-23T10:00:53+00:00 Sponsored by Northampton Roofing Wavenden Golf Club, a new addition to the Crown and Anchor tour greeted the 28 players for the start of the 2010 season. Phil Cassidy had the honour of the opening drive to get the season underway and this duly disappeared out of bounds!.Recently treated greens made putting of all distances very tricky and unpredictable but the overall impression of the course was a favourable one among the members. The overall winner and recipient of the now slightly damaged trophy went to Grahm Wood with an excellent 40 points. Gary Loveland claimed the Runners Up spot with 38 points, this was largely due to scoring back to back gross birdies culminating in nine stableford points for the two holes. Bob Lee's new swing changes paid immediate dividends as he managed the third place on the podium and then duly scooped the "nearest the pin" award for his effort on the 5th. Pete Utting triumphed in the battle of the long hitters when the "Longest Drive" competition went his way. There was a surprise in the "Must do Better" category when this award went to Martin Behan with 22 points. Final Standings

LG publishes bendy 19in e-newspaper

LG has taken a big step in the ePaper R&D by demoing a 19" bendy ePaper prototype. For those who are not sure what ePaper is, put simply is a bendable computer screen, which hopefully (in time) will fold into your pocket. ePaper also uses new technology which means it continues to display what was last on the screen when it is completly turned off. This of course means the battery life is vastly improved. It is estimated this technology will be worth billions over the coming decade. Can you imagine a 'piece of paper' which folds, rarely needs charging and recives your daily paper automatically. For more information and images, check out this news article
